The term \u201cchronic\u201d or \u201clong-term\u201d infectious process implies persistence of the pathogen. According to the terminology of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), such phenomenon is described as \u201cLong COVID\u201d, \u201cpost-COVID syndrome\u201d and \u201cpost-acute COVID-19 syndrome\u201d, while Harvard Medical School uses the term \u201clong-hauler\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acute COVID-19:<\/strong>\u00a0signs and symptoms of COVID-19 for up to 4 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ongoing symptomatic COVID-19:<\/strong>\u00a0signs and symptoms of COVID-19 from 4 to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Post-COVID-19 syndrome:<\/strong>\u00a0signs and symptoms that develop during or after an infection consistent with COVID-19, continue for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Post-COVID long-hauler<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a person diagnosed with COVID-19 caused by SARSCoV 2 who has not returned to baseline health and body functioning 3 to 6 months after the illness.<\/p>\n<p>According to various estimates, 10 to 50% of patients who have had COVID 19 become \u201clong-hauler\u201d: some of these patients have irreversible damage to the lungs, heart, kidneys, or brain that impairs the functioning of these organs; others, despite no noticeable organ damage, still have debilitating symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Long-COVID hides under different masks: scientists identify more than 200 post-COVID symptoms in 10 organ systems. Long-COVID-19 masks have a common pathogenesis of complications \u2013 pathophysiological syndromes: endotheliitis, systemic inflammation, pulmonitis and a pronounced clinical syndrome \u2013 asthenia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f525.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd25\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Systemic inflammation<\/strong>\u00a0is a consequence of a systemic hyperimmune response. Cytokines continue to be released as in a cytokine storm in the lungs, but to a lesser degree, which is further accompanied by immune inflammation in brainstem structures \u2013 neuroinflammation. Provokes the development of neurological complications.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f4db.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udcdb\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Endotheliitis<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 generalized inflammatory damage of endothelium, provoking coagulation homeostasis disorder, thromboembolism, decrease of myocardial energy supply, development of heart attacks, strokes, myocarditis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f198.svg\" alt=\"\ud83c\udd98\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Pulmonitis<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 pulmonary damage due to vascular and alveolocyte damage by virus and cytokines.
