What is Xavron?
Xavron is a prescription medicinal product indicated for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and acute ischemic stroke. According to the mechanism of action, Xavron is an acceptor of free radicals which protect nerve cells from damage, reducing oxidative stress.
What is the active substance of Xavron?
The active substance of Xavron is edaravone. This is the first novel active substance in 22 years that has been officially approved in the developed countries for the pathogenetic treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Is it possible to cure amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with Xavron?
Today, there are no products that can completely cure amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A therapy with Xavron, however, has been proven to slow down the rate of disease progression by 33%.
How to administer Xavron in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
Xavron at a dose of 60 mg (2 capsules) is administered by intravenous infusion for 60 min once daily. Before administration, the contents of an ampoule should be dissolved in a sufficient amount of sodium chloride 0.9 %. Usually, the duration of administration and cessation of this product are combined in one cycle of treatment for 28 days and the cycle should be repeated. This product is consecutively infused for 14 days in the duration of administration followed by cessation for 14 days in the 1st cycle, and from the 2nd cycle, this product is infused for 10 of 14 days in the duration of administration followed by cessation for 14 days.
How long do I need to take Xavron for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
According to the instructions for medical use, there are no restrictions on the duration of administration of Xavron in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor.
Who should not take Xavron?
Contraindications to the administration of Xavron are:
- Severe renal failure.
- Hypersensitivity to the components of the product.
How can I know that Xavron helps me?
As Xavron does not remedy amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ensure the disease regression, a patient may not subjectively feel the treatment results. As a result, the patient may erroneously think that the medicinal product has no effect. It should be noted that clinical trials have shown a slowdown in the rate of physical activity loss in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who were administered edaravone compared with the control group. Therefore, it is important that the patient continues therapy with Xavron according to prescription.
Is it possible to use Xavron in combination with other medications (e.g., riluzole)?
